What makes Christmas Day so Special?

It’s Christmas Day and with no gifts to focus on in the Jordan household I went to the big dining room window and watched the sun rise. It was a moment to thank God for sending Jesus to earth and for all the many gifts and blessings He gives us throughout each and every day.

Just being alive today is a gift that can only come from God! The fact that there are family members who care through thick and thin as well as an extended “friend” family cannot be measured. So many people have no one and no where to go today. We have so much already, who needs gifts?

Each year I hear that favorite complaint “I don’t know what to get” for who ever. The fact is often brought up that the gift will probably be taken back to the store anyway. Why bother? If gifts are supposed to be symbolic of the gift of Christ then the callous attitude negates any similarity right out of the gate!
Since Christmas is a religious holiday shouldn’t we be thinking spiritually and not “earthly” anyway? All the gifts worth having are spiritual. They are the ones that last, the ones we covet most: salvation, love, honor, integrity, sanity, health, wisdom, the ability to think and to appreciate, and a whole lot more that will never fit into a box.

We are fortunate enough to be able to go out anytime we want to pick up whatever we want from practically any place we chose. In fact, we don’t even have to leave the house anymore – just go online or pick up the phone to place an order, pay with plastic in a virtual world, and wait for the delivery.

This blog post is part of my gift to you. It’s a reminder that although receiving the pretty box and surprise contents is fun, Christmas is way more and should be. How wonderful would the world be if everyone focused: the rat race would become slow, undulating in a casual way, taking time to greet one another with warm wishes instead of with “get out of my way” and “I'm in a hurry.” We can only hope.

I have so little really; yes, I have house, car, food, shelter, but they came from others. Of myself I have little, little that I think is worthy of you, worthy of giving you. You are the important parts of my life. The rest of my gift to you is my undying love and devoted loyalty to you for the rest of my days. It is all I have and it is the most I have. I freely give it to you forever.

May God bless you as only He can do! Have a wonderful Christmas Day!
