What Goes Up

We went out early yesterday, before it got too hot, to finish pruning the big holly bushes. At one point, while waiting for Hubster to wrangle some reluctant vines, I wandered over to the Weeping Cherry tree. Doing a quick survey I found a dead limb close to the ground that needs cutting and decided a weed-whacker would not be amiss.

After that I went to the big Mimosa tree where the swing and hammock chair are. It had been a long time since I’d visited and my back was giving out from standing around too long.
We’ve always brought the regular hammock in over winter. The chair version had never been taken down, it being tied high above the ground. I pulled the “seat” open; it was very stiff from being in the same position for so long. But I clambered in.

A good idea in theory, the hammock chair has never been too comfortable; it’s like sitting inside of an eggshell. My knees drooped over the side, practically begging to cut the circulation off. Slowly the chair began to turn. I remembered the last time I’d done this and how relaxing it was, gently swaying in the breeze.
Next thing I know I’m headed south! I heard a loud snap and I’m suddenly in a tangle of webbed roping. My feet hit first, followed by my butt. All I could think about was to hit my butt and not a hip.

I quickly got to my knees, the shock of being on the ground sinking in. I looked at the hammock, dangling there, not looking any too trustworthy. No, I can’t use that to pull myself up and the trunk of the mimosa was too far away. Besides, my tailbone was starting to hurt and I wondered if I had done any damage. I called out my significant other who would now be witness to my self-induced folly.

He helped me up and into the house. Nothing like a quick shower to remove all the leaves and debris from my hair and arms, followed by a nice little lay-down on an icepack. Oh the joy!

No pun intended, but my tale is done. I don’t feel any more ill-effects other than my back feels a little sore. We’ll see later how that goes. Back aches are old hat.
