Fluffy, Not Stuffy

I've been on a crochet kick lately, making several of the Potato Chip scarves. Those are so easy to do.

This one is absolutely my favorite. It's made with Lion Brand Homestead in Quartz. Because it was only a piece of skein I ran out of yarn. After looking in 2 Walmarts and a Michaels without luck I improvised by adding a lovely lavender colored yarn that matched perfectly. Don't ask what the lavender yarn was - I got it from a thrift store a while ago and it didn't come with a wrapper. But oh my goodness, it is so soft, like a baby yarn. Anyway, it worked perfectly.

Potato Chip scarves are just too simple to not try making one. Start with a chain, then add half-double crochet stitches, alternating one in a hole, two in a hole, one in a hole, two in a hole... all the way across. Then turn and come back. Do that to the depth you want. I finished with single crochet across the border.

You can throw in a double-crochet line or maybe just do a single crochet - however the mood strikes ya. You can't really mess it up. The scarf grows wavy because of those double stitches in every other hole... You're adding an extra 50% to each row and it has to go somewhere, so it starts coiling.

Remember, that you'll gain about 2 inches on either end on your finished scarf, so bear that in mind when you do your original length of chain. My light blue and white scarf was done using the recommended 221 chains. I think that's way too long (and I have a very tight stitch to start with). I did about 150 on the Quartz scarf and it's a much better length.
