It's getting hot out. I'm not a fan of crocheting when it's hot. I finally managed to finish up my last afghan lap rug and this past week, on behalf of the BBC Crochet Circle I delivered eight lap rugs to a local nursing home. They were delighted to see them and oo'd and ah'd over the bright colors. You'd think hot weather would not be a good time to give blankets away, but folks in nursing homes tend to be colder than others. They say seniors often have thinner skin and poorer blood circulation, plus meds can also lower body temperatures, so I guess it makes sense.
The Activity Directors were very appreciative and had thoughts on using some as Bingo prizes. From my own experiences when I worked at an Assisted Living facility you don't want to get in the way of elderly Bingo players whatsoever. They can turn on you in the blink of an eye! You could lose a limb just for calling out the numbers wrong! OMG! So prizes are extremely beneficial and to think that our little blankets were worthy is high praise indeed, LoL!
But at least the hot (IMHO) blankets are gone. We've now started using the round knitting looms at Crochet Club. I think our timing on learning looms is perfect because when I asked the nursing home if we could make anything else for them they mentioned hand-warmers. I made one for myself to keep in the car last year and it was great on cold days. Nice and cozy. I made some for my dad's cold hands at Christmas. I think we could be delivering some Crochet Club hand-warmers before the end of July, don't you?
The nice thing about hand-warmers is that they don't take up much space. They don't cover your lap like a blanket and are small enough to travel well too; just a perfect summer yarn project. To everything, there is a season, right? Who knew June and July would end up as hand-warmer season?!
