Plarn Forever

The Crochet Club finished making hats for cancer patients and moved on to try crocheting plastic bags into bed mats for the homeless. I took a couple of videos to the church and after watching we set to work. The way we did the bag cutting was similar to peeling an apple in one long string.

We quickly got the hang of the basics, but when it came time to commence crocheting the whole process slowed to a crawl. The plastic strip was horrible when slipping through my fingers, sticking and hanging up every few seconds. After a while I kind of got a rhythm going and my stitches became more even, as my frustration grew more.

After all that work and effort, in an hour's time I had made a chain 33 inches long and almost finished a 2nd row. At this rate I'll be 90 years old by the time I get any sizable mat made!

Some members were cutting loops instead of long strands of plastic. I know that makes the "plarn" twice as thick, which would be preferable to the single-ply strand I was using. But I certainly entertain the thought that it would be twice as slow to work into anything useful! I guess this week I'll try the loop method, just to be fair.

But oh my, what was I thinking?
