The Crochet Club has been working on making those recycled plastic bag mats for the homeless. I wasn't totally on board in the beginning but it grows on you. Switching from single stitch to double-crochet stitch has helped the look and the speed. I've yet to try powder to see if it aids the ease of the plastic between my fingers. I hate when it jams.
I wandered away from bags to try my hand at some little crocheted crosses. The Club made crosses for Easter last year from "normal" yarn, but I had lighter, smaller baby-weight yarn to try. The little 3 inch crosses turned out pretty good with a few tweaks.
The one with the heart was my first attempt. I added a heart on top using a small ball of pink cotton from a recent thrift store excursion. Not bad.
On my 2nd cross I changed the number of stitches from 3 to 4 on each grouping, which increased the sturdiness without adding a lot of bulk. Worked great! Then I added a pink outline. Ooh, I liked that idea, but it seemed rough and not refined enough for the vision in my head.
I looked in my big bookcase full of yarn and found baby yarn in green and blue. It worked perfectly on my 3rd and 4th crosses as I slip-stitched my way around the edge using the smallest needle I had. A brief try using a needle was a dismal fail.
I took three of the crosses to very special ladies in the nursing home. They loved them!
