Tonight we are sad because our sweet Golden Retriever, Willie has left us for good. We cried and we buried him lovingly in the quiet spot of the woods filled with irises.
We knew he wasn't doing good, but still we weren't prepared for the emptiness we feel. Willie was about 15 years old and his last couple of years were a miracle at all. We took him to a vet thinking he was gone then from heat stroke one morning. We brought him home to die, only to nurse him back to health with a syringe and eggs, one drop at a time.
Willie was a rescued dog about 3 years old who had always been in trouble living in a suburban household. He wanted and needed a bigger yard and fields and woods to explore, not neighbors who called the cops on his adventures. Eventually his former parents left him at the dog pound. Dan's work was next door; Dan watched him pace back and forth only a few days before he knew Willie would become our newest member of our family. He loved to explore and would often sneak away to Paradise Nursery to visit, "just a little ways, mom!" he looked to be saying as he got in the truck all covered with mud and weeds and briars.
We are sad to lose Willie but are so glad we were able to give him a good home and that he was part of our lives for so long.
