She’s Gone

She had two names – Sweetie and Smiley. Well, she’s gone now, apparently died in her sleep sometime over night. Both her names fit her well because she was a very sweet natured creature and she, well, smiled.
Tree 020 A beagle with a touch of something that gave her a flag tail she was really pretty, especially her lovely doe eyes. She never had a really good life, but we saved her from certain death when she came to live with us several years ago. With a misshaped front paw, perhaps the result of a break when young that was never attended, the previous owner decided he didn’t want her any longer and planned to put her down. We brought her home with the understanding that we’d find her a real home of her own.
04-09-09 03 We did, sort of. She went to live with a co-worker of Dan’s who had a little boy.  But at that time in her life she reveled anytime freedom was offered after being caged so much of the time; her resolve to “not listen” plus her highly exuberant energy caused her  new owner to bring her back very quickly along with all the toys their family had bought for her. She was too much for a boy of only three.
Smiley Sweetie, AKA Smiley (the former Trixie) stayed in the same pen with our retriever, Willie. They played and slept together. Often we’d see her asleep in the doghouse doorway with her head laying on top of Willie’s back as he sprawled across the ground in front of the opening.
Dan is the most sad. He spent more time with her, feeding and cleaning her, walking with her. He also spent the most time being mad at her when she wouldn’t listen; she’d keep right on heading to the road, head down and nose to the ground. He’d have to run after her.
She always let us know when a car arrived, barking her warning; she quickly quieted when she would recognize a familiar vehicle.
She lived longer than she would have had she stayed in her old home. She was a wonderful companion for Willie through the rest of  his life. I’m sure they are playing together again, glad to be back with each other, while we here, we miss her.
