Today, Saturday has got to be the longest day of our trip. We left this morning about 7:30am Central time from West Plains MO and have just unpacked (again) at 9pm Eastern time. He wanted to get to the home side of Knoxville and we just barely made it before I would have to take my sunglasses and accompanying bifocals off. The thought of him having to navigate AND read signs spurred him on and we went through Knoxville in record time.
We weren’t real pleased with a lot of aspects of our last night’s room with Best Western (we usually do Days Inn with great success). 2nd floor was incredibly noisy, especially with the lady next door banging on her door because she was (probably) too lazy to take her key! Breakfast was less than thrilling with sticky muffins wrapped in plastic and we’re guessing from the local 7-11, and the cauldron of milky sausage gravy for our cold biscuits was cold as well. We ate enough to get us through to a good lunch at a Texas Roadhouse in Paducah KS later that day.
You will notice that the photos are taken through a dirty windshield. When we left we took a “cross-over” road that ended up being about 100 miles long through the mountains; curves and long stretches of up and down ribbon roads, oh yeah! One time early on we debated turning around and heading into Arkansas, thinking it might actually end up shorter, but plowed on.
We rode convoy style with trucks heading across what seemed to be a road on a dike mound to keep the potentially flooding Ohio from reaching the green fields. One hairpin turn was so sharp we almost met ourselves.
Crossing the Ohio River and the many barges inspired us to actually visit the River Front Museum in Paducah KS when we got there again on our trip back. The museum had lots of displays about maritime in early times and especially the riverboats and barge history. We played in the Simulation Room set up like the bridge on a huge boat. Dan navigated our tug towards a bridge with obstacles, but we took so long the computer quit and we left. I convinced him to let me take his picture with this diving suit; very unwilling at first.
Upstairs they have the original 1800s meeting rooms all set up. The window glass was all wavy and furnishings were large. We noticed that the embroidered seat cushions looks an awful lot like some Dan’s grandmother had been working on, so we took pictures of those too.
Paducah has this cool sea wall all decorated. Dan got carried away with those photos. There is so much to see in Paducah we’ve put it on our list of places to go and explore later.
I can’t remember where we saw that huge cross on the hill. But it was too cool not to get a picture.
Tomorrow we will leave early and head across VA; the plan is to make it home in one piece and safely to our own little bed. But for tonight it’s Good Night from Knoxville!
