Just about every Sunday I get up early and go to church at 8:30am. I rehearse the day's music, prepare copies for the choir, check that things are right in the hallway and on the bulletin boards and then go to my Sunday School class. Today was supposed to be just like that.
I got up early, got my shower, dressed and turned the Christmas Tree lights on. I love putting the ornaments and stuff on the tree when it's just lit by its own lights. I'd just gotten started when all the lights went out. Good Grief, what had I done? But the lights went out everywhere for everybody. "Well," I thought, "at least I got my shower done."
It was blustery outside so I figured a tree fell across a line somewhere. We're in the boonies so it might take a while to get fixed. I lit some candles and started crocheting a new hat by candlelight, while waiting for Hubster to get up (he sleeps until our two terriers wake him). It wasn't long though before my phone rang and one of our church deacons told me that church was cancelled. I can see the reasoning behind it... no electricity for heating that big old sanctuary, or water for the bathrooms; no sound system or recording; not even much light in some of the dimly lighted rooms.
But still, it seemed a bit odd. I've heard of cancelling things because of snow. In this mild weather area they sometimes cancel schools and businesses because it just looks like snow. But we had no lights, that's all, no lights.
I guess I was all psyched up for Church, running through my list of things to do ahead of time. Ok, so back to my warm pjs. Soon Hubster got up, the dogs got up, and the sky started brightening up with what light the clouds didn't block. Everything normal, except I was still at home at 8:30am.
I finally let go and relaxed on my 'free' day since I didn't have to dress up, run around doing church errands, teach a class, or follow a schedule. It's been nice for a change. We had a great big ol' omelette for breakfast and a late lunch after making a pizza run while picking up some bread and milk (in case the lights go out again).
You know, I'll pay for it the rest of the week when I keep forgetting what day it is because I missed going to church today.
