More Lap Rugs

This beige lap rug afghan is made using leftover skeins. I had no idea how it might turn out as I started the many rows in the center. When it was time to add interest I checked the nursing home's donation bag and found the smallest bit of variegated yarn; so small it was doubled over and the end wound around it to keep it compact. There was no way of knowing how far it would go.

I made it in the new (for me) style that I've come to love. Doing 20 rows seems to be my golden ticket... just the right size. But I was 4 rows shy of how my previous lap rug had turned out. Since these were donated skeins I thought, "What will I do? I'll never find more in the right colors." But then I remembered that little long loom experiment I'd done when I first got the yarn from the nursing home. It wasn't much, but I hustled off to start unraveling.

Lo and behold I had enough for two more rows of beige! And the last little bit of color yarn barely made it, but actually went around for one extra row of slip stitch (just to use it up) for a sweet border. It turned out nicely, even if it's a bit smaller than I'd wanted. So I'm hoping a smaller guest at the nursing home will be pleased to use it through these cold winter days and then some.

I added it to the other blankets I'd created including one made from a variegated green, pink and white yarn I bought before Christmas. It also turned out nice, all soft and cozy. Our BBC Crochet Club met this week for the first time after the busy holidays. I shared how to do this thicker granny square and they like it too. We pretty much think it works up faster than a traditional granny because you don't have to make all those holes!
