I have just had a huge stroke of luck regarding my genealogy files. I recently discovered that the sources for the 10,888 individuals in my file was massively screwed up somehow, a mixing up of sorts. Instead of Mom and Dad's marriage certificate showing only 2 uses, there were over 400 and it had replaced another source and so on and so on. I tell you, I actually cried it was so overwhelming.
Today I thought I would recheck some of my backup files in case I'd missed something. I have about 4 discs with various copies of the backup file, the oldest went back to December 2006. It still showed the same problem. I guess this mess-up happened a while ago, but I'd quit doing my own genealogy for the most part about 3 years and worked on other people's research.
Today I rediscovered one more file, a different type of backup I'd done in December 2004. I'd made it as an experiment to see how it worked; I'd never used it. Even though it goes back to 2004, it has been the God-send I was looking for.
My current files come in at 20,036KB. The 2004 file comes in at 3,779KB. I've added a lot of people since that time. Now I need to get another computer set up out here so I can see both files at the same time and start correcting the 2008 files.
I guess it's a good thing I just finished getting all the web sites straightened out. Now I can concentrate on just this. Wish me luck!
