It's On

Finally it's cold enough to start the afghan. Here's what I have going so far.

It's up to about 2 foot x 2 foot. I had a piece of skein in this color to start with. Then I had 2 big, I mean big, skeins of the same yarn to be added. I'd thought about putting in various colors to break it up, but now I'm thinking I'll just do all the blue and see how far that gets me before I come up with the next color.

See, I have a California King-size bed and this is going to be my new "blankie" for it. A blankie is that comfort zone, usuable piece that you wrap up in when you get sick or what to read a book in bed or stand outside on the cold deck while your dog takes forever to whizz. It's the one that doesn't get put away because it's too pretty or too special or being saved for someone else to use after you die.

My last big blankie was made in 1973. My mom had given me a birthday present of about 20 skeins of yarn and I used every bit of it and then a little more. That blankie is 40 years old now. I love it. It's not very pretty in brown and orange and other fall colors (I'm a summer color person who likes the blues and turquoises), but it's been a loving blankie that was loved back...a lot.

Now that we have had our little dog for over a year I don't want my old blankie to come to a bad end so it will be replaced (ha, as if) with this new one. You know it takes a lot of washings to get that just-right fuzzy feel as the fibers mesh together. It will be awhile before this one becomes a beloved thing, but I'm confident that it will someday. I guess, based on the age of the last one, that this one will see me through my doting old age. Appropriately so, I guess. The last one started on my birthday. This one started just a few days ago and my birthday is a couple of days from now. I think the timing is perfect, don't you?!
