Mistaken Dirt

It seems like a good idea at the time, but for the longest time it was just a big ol' mistake.

Once upon a time the city crews were cleaning out the ditches around here. Thinking to get some dirt to fill in holes around the yard Hubster asked them nicely to bring a load into our yard. But before we could snap our eyes and I knew what he'd done we had three big huge loads dumped on the side of the yard by his shop.

This isn't the nice clean dirt you get from Home Depot. Oh no! That would have made it easier to take. This was dirty dirt, filled with trash like bits of paper, pebbles and rocks, and glass from broken  bottles thrown from vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed to increase the challenge of the aim at the mailbox.

From this picture you only see part of the leftover dirty area that has been scraped down to the ground. So you can tell I'm wasn't talking about small loads of dirt. (I mean they came in by dump truck, for goodness sake)! We had big piles and over the last few years while awaiting for this "tractor day" to arrive critters have lived in these piles! I shutter to think what was in there!!

You see that big green pile to the left of the tractor? In that brush is a lone cedar tree that we planted in the middle of the piles of dirt back in 2011. It was only a foot tall at the time, and the theory was that when the piles went away we wouldn't end up with a tree that was smaller than the rest of the line of trees because it was planted later. I didn't quite believe it would work, but don't you know it has!?!

I can't tell you how glad I am for this to be over!!
