This has been a challenging week. Our little Kitty that we’ve had since 2001 lives in the garage when not outside. But this week he was left in the garage when temperatures dipped very low with the weekend winter storm. We should have brought him in the house, but we forgot. By chance I went to look for something and he howled at me (he leads a very quiet life so it was unusual to hear him). I noticed his look of utter confusion, his unkempt fur, and unsteady gait; because of his age we thought he’d had a stroke.
We brought him in my office, warming him up by the heat vent in the mini crochet blanket I’d made for my critters. For a whole day he barely moved. Danny fed him moisture from beef stew off his finger. He didn’t take much, nor did he drink any water. We kept trying.
Danny slept on the floor with him the second night after Kitty wandered into our bedroom to sleep at the cold foot of our bed, apparently not wanting to be alone. It was all so sad.
It wasn’t until late the second night when we finally got him to take some water. You can live without food, but not water. We were elated. I bought five cans of cat food pate, since he wasn’t eating anything crunchy. I think the likes the turkey.
We took him to the vet late Monday. We had to know if he’d had a stroke or not. It was good news. I’m guessing my first thought was right - that he was just very very cold. Maybe we’ll never know for sure what happened. But I know that from now on for the rest of his life he’ll be an indoor house cat, living the life of Riley, curled up at my feet as he is now.
Yesterday the sun came out and you’d never know it snowed a couple of days ago. We took Kitty out on the deck to sit in the sun that he loves to do so often. Danny combed him out and he purred, music to our ears. He didn’t want to stay out long, but it was a start.
So many Facebook friends followed the story and sent prayers and well-wishes our way. I know it helped and we’re both so grateful. We look forward to Kitty improving more each day and are hopeful to have him around for another year or two at least.
