Just a Bump

We were cleaning up things before this Hurricane Earl got here and took everything we own to Canada. Dan was putting stuff into the greenhouse when he accidently touched the celosia plant that has been growing in the cracks between the pavers. It was just outside the doorway. All summer we’d been watching in amazement as this plant grew, with barely a thread of root seeping up from beneath the tight crevice.

I’ve got several specimens of the same plant growing all around, in pots, volunteers, but none could hold a candle to this one particular plant. It wasn’t spindly and thin; it was compact and bushy and full of blooms. It looked like something from a magazine. I’d planned to photograph it after it started to get cold and the growing season was nearing its end.

Alas! The bump broke the web-like connection. Dan came in, saying, “I owe you an apology.” OMG? What for?

He felt so bad. But I told him it was going to all die anyway when it got cold. So I had him hold it back in place so I could get my photo. Then he poked it into a nearby pot so we could enjoy it until it faded. C’est le vie.
